Defence Stocks Surge as Policy Push and Export Orders Boost Investor Confidence

By Kunal Shrivastav , 19 September 2025

India’s defence sector has emerged as a significant theme in the equity markets, with defence-related stocks witnessing strong rallies amid government policy support, rising domestic procurement, and increasing export opportunities. With a clear thrust toward self-reliance through the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and record defence allocations in the Union Budget, investors are betting on long-term growth in the industry. Companies across the spectrum—public sector undertakings (PSUs) and private manufacturers alike—are gaining from robust order books, strategic collaborations, and technological advancements, making defence stocks one of the most closely watched segments in Indian equities today.

Policy Support Driving Momentum

The government has steadily increased defence capital expenditure, with allocations crossing Rs. 6 lakh crore in the latest budget. A significant portion of this is earmarked for domestic procurement, creating sustained demand for indigenous manufacturers.

Additionally, multiple items have been placed on the "negative import list," ensuring that Indian companies get priority in supplying equipment ranging from drones and radars to warships and missile systems. These measures are structurally boosting the revenue visibility of defence firms and attracting strong investor attention.

Performance of Leading Defence Stocks

Public sector giants such as Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL), and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders have been standout performers on the bourses, with shares delivering multibagger returns over the past two years. HAL, backed by its strong aircraft and helicopter manufacturing pipeline, has seen its market capitalization surge significantly. BEL continues to benefit from its expertise in radars, communication systems, and electronic warfare solutions.

Private sector companies like Bharat Forge, Data Patterns, and Paras Defence are also gaining traction, supported by their niche offerings in aerospace, artillery systems, and defense electronics. Together, they represent a growing private sector role in India’s defence ecosystem.

Exports and Global Collaborations

India’s defence exports have crossed Rs. 21,000 crore, reflecting rising global acceptance of indigenous equipment. Collaborative ventures with foreign players for technology transfer and joint production are enhancing the capabilities of domestic firms, opening new revenue streams.

For listed companies, export orders are becoming a critical growth driver, diversifying their dependence beyond Indian government contracts and improving long-term earnings stability.

Investor Outlook and Risks

Market analysts note that defence stocks remain attractive for long-term investors due to structural tailwinds, strong order pipelines, and predictable cash flows. However, they caution that the sector is also sensitive to geopolitical developments, regulatory changes, and execution risks in large-scale projects.

Despite these challenges, the consensus view remains bullish, as India’s defence modernization and export ambitions provide a multi-year growth runway.

Conclusion

The rise of defence stocks in India is not just a market phenomenon but a reflection of the country’s strategic shift toward self-reliance, innovation, and global competitiveness in defence manufacturing. With supportive policies, expanding exports, and robust corporate performance, the sector stands at the forefront of India’s growth story. For investors seeking exposure to long-term structural themes, defence stocks present a compelling opportunity aligned with both national priorities and market potential.
