India Posts Strong Q2 GDP Growth as Domestic Demand and Investments Accelerate

By Geeta Maurya , 1 December 2025

India’s economy delivered a robust performance in the second quarter, with GDP growth driven by strong domestic demand, resilient services activity, and a notable uptick in investments. The latest numbers reinforce expectations that India will remain one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies in the current fiscal year. Manufacturing momentum, improved agricultural output, and government-led capital expenditure have further anchored economic expansion. While global headwinds persist—ranging from volatile commodity prices to geopolitical uncertainty—India’s macroeconomic fundamentals appear stable, supported by steady credit growth and rising consumer confidence. Policymakers believe the economy is on course for sustained medium-term expansion.

Momentum Strengthens as India Reports Solid Q2 Growth

India’s gross domestic product expanded at a healthy pace in the second quarter, underscoring the economy’s resilience despite an uncertain global environment. The growth was primarily supported by strong private consumption, firm investment activity, and continued robustness in the services sector.

Economists note that the quarterly performance reflects both cyclical recovery and structural improvements. With industrial output gaining traction and large-scale infrastructure spending continuing across states, the economy has shown an ability to maintain momentum even as global markets remain uneven.

Manufacturing and Services Drive Expansion

Manufacturing posted a meaningful recovery during the quarter, benefiting from improved capacity utilisation, stable input prices, and stronger order books. Sectors such as automobiles, electronics, and chemicals recorded sustained production increases, signalling healthier supply-demand dynamics.

The services sector—India’s economic backbone—remained a powerful contributor to growth. Financial services, trade, transport and communication, and technology-driven industries continued to expand, supported by rising digital adoption and growing corporate spending.

These combined forces helped offset moderation in exports, which have faced pressure due to subdued demand in advanced economies.

Investment Activity Remains a Key Growth Pillar

Gross fixed capital formation advanced steadily during the quarter, reflecting rising confidence among businesses. Private sector capital expenditure is gradually improving, while public investment—especially in transport infrastructure, logistics networks, and urban development—remains a significant growth catalyst.

Analysts believe this sustained investment cycle is crucial for lifting India’s medium-term growth potential. Strong credit growth, increased government capex, and a robust pipeline of infrastructure projects are expected to reinforce economic expansion through the fiscal year.

Agriculture Shows Stability Despite Weather Concerns

Agricultural output registered modest improvement during the quarter, supported by better-than-expected crop performance in certain regions despite uneven monsoon patterns. Food inflation remains an area of concern, but early estimates suggest that crop supplies may stabilise in the coming months, easing pressure on retail prices.

Rural consumption, which had shown signs of strain in previous quarters, is gradually recovering, aided by better agricultural conditions and increased government support for rural programmes.

Macroeconomic Indicators Signal Balanced Growth

Inflation has moderated relative to recent highs, though food prices and global commodity volatility remain potential risks. The Reserve Bank of India has maintained a balanced policy stance, focusing on anchoring inflation while supporting economic activity.

On the external front, India’s trade deficit remains elevated, but resilient services exports and strong inward remittances continue to provide a cushion. Foreign investment flows have been selective yet steady, reflecting global investor interest in India’s long-term growth prospects.

Outlook: India Positioned for Continued Expansion

With the second-quarter results reinforcing confidence, economists expect India to post strong full-year GDP growth. The combination of resilient domestic demand, a sustained investment cycle, and stable macroeconomic policies provides a solid foundation for expansion.

While external risks—from geopolitical tensions to global supply chain shifts—may create episodic volatility, India’s economic trajectory remains firmly upward. Policymakers and businesses alike view the latest GDP numbers as evidence of a durable and broad-based recovery that could set the tone for future economic milestones.
