India’s Aircraft Fleet Set to Triple by 2035, Airbus Forecasts

By Amrita Bhatia , 31 January 2026

India’s aviation market is on the cusp of a major expansion, with the country’s commercial aircraft fleet projected to nearly triple by 2035, according to aircraft manufacturer Airbus. The outlook is anchored in strong domestic travel demand, rising disposable incomes and sustained investment in airport infrastructure. Airlines are rapidly expanding capacity to serve both metro and regional routes, making India one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally. Airbus expects narrow-body aircraft to dominate future deliveries, reflecting the structure of India’s travel demand. The forecast points to significant long-term opportunities across airlines, leasing firms and the broader aerospace ecosystem.

Structural Drivers Behind Fleet Expansion

India’s aviation growth is being propelled by a combination of economic and demographic factors. A growing middle class, increased urbanization and greater affordability of air travel have expanded the passenger base well beyond traditional metro markets. Domestic air traffic has consistently outpaced global averages, reinforcing confidence in long-term fleet growth.

Improved connectivity between tier-two and tier-three cities has further widened the market, making air travel a practical alternative to rail and road transport.

Narrow-Body Jets to Lead Growth

Airbus expects single-aisle aircraft to account for the majority of fleet additions over the next decade. These planes are ideally suited to India’s high-frequency, short- and medium-haul routes, allowing airlines to maximize capacity utilization while keeping operating costs under control.

Low-cost carriers are expected to remain the primary drivers of this expansion, using scale and competitive pricing to stimulate demand across price-sensitive segments.

Infrastructure Expansion Supports Momentum

The rapid expansion of airport infrastructure has played a crucial role in enabling fleet growth. New airports, runway upgrades and terminal expansions have increased capacity and reduced operational bottlenecks.

Government-led initiatives to improve regional connectivity and encourage private investment have also strengthened the sector’s foundation, providing airlines with the confidence to place large aircraft orders.

Implications for the Aviation Value Chain

A tripling of India’s aircraft fleet will have wide-ranging implications across the aviation value chain. Aircraft manufacturers, lessors, maintenance providers and airport operators stand to benefit from sustained demand.

Financing requirements are expected to rise sharply, increasing reliance on leasing and structured finance solutions. Analysts note that India’s aviation market could become a key growth engine for the global aerospace industry.

Long-Term Outlook Remains Robust

While the sector faces near-term challenges such as fuel price volatility and intense competition, the long-term outlook remains firmly positive. Strong demand fundamentals, supportive policy measures and ongoing infrastructure development continue to underpin growth.

Airbus’ projection underscores India’s rising prominence in global aviation. As mobility needs evolve alongside economic growth, air travel is set to play an increasingly central role in shaping the country’s transport landscape.
