The maize crop in Maharashtra's Marathwada region is facing early distress this season due to insufficient rainfall and rising soil moisture evaporation. While the situation is not yet critical, officials warn that continued water stress could significantly impact productivity. Delayed Rainfall Sparks Crop Stress
Agricultural activity in Marathwada—a region historically vulnerable to erratic monsoons—is grappling with challenges once again. This year, the maize crop, which has rapidly expanded in cultivation area, is already showing signs of distress due to inconsistent rainfall and rapid evaporation of soil moisture.
As of June 19, maize had been sown across approximately 98,891 hectares, out of a projected 2.56 lakh hectares for the entire Kharif season. The eight districts comprising Marathwada—Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Jalna, Beed, Hingoli, Dharashiv, Latur, Parbhani, and Nanded—have been particularly affected by the rainfall shortfall.
Maize Displacing Cotton Amid Climatic Volatility
In a shift driven by changing market dynamics and input cost considerations, maize has increasingly replaced cotton in several regions. Agriculture officials estimate that nearly 50,000 hectares previously dedicated to cotton cultivation have transitioned to maize this season.
However, maize is inherently more sensitive to water availability during its early growth phases. "The crop is experiencing water stress in patches due to moisture loss and inadequate rainfall," noted Prakash Deshmukh, the district's superintending agriculture officer.
Deshmukh added that although the situation is precarious, it remains manageable. "A brief spell of rain at this juncture could replenish soil moisture and stabilise the crop’s condition."
Rainfall Deficit: A Growing Concern
The meteorological deficit is becoming increasingly pronounced. Marathwada has received only 70.5 mm of rainfall in June, falling short of the normal average of 102.7 mm. The discrepancy is more glaring when compared to last year’s figure of 158.1 mm for the same period—a nearly 55% year-on-year decline.
Agricultural scientists and district planners are closely monitoring the trend, particularly as further delay in rainfall could exacerbate soil dehydration and reduce yield potential.
Outlook and Contingency Measures
While the crop's fate hinges on the monsoon's performance in the coming days, contingency measures are being considered. These include the promotion of moisture-retention practices such as mulching, staggered irrigation using existing water resources, and advisories to farmers on intercropping or sowing of drought-resistant varieties.
Furthermore, the state agriculture department is likely to assess the ground situation for any need-based interventions, including financial relief or input subsidies, if the rainfall deficiency persists into July.
