NTPC Powers Ahead: 20 GW Pumped Storage Blueprint Aims to Secure India’s Renewable Future

By Nitin Mohan Mishra , 16 June 2025

India’s largest power utility, NTPC Group, is accelerating its push into renewable energy storage with an ambitious portfolio of pumped storage projects (PSPs) totaling 20 GW. Aimed at strengthening the country’s energy resilience and transition to cleaner sources, NTPC plans to commission between 3 to 5 GW of capacity by FY2031–32. The initiative is supported by NTPC subsidiaries, including THDC India, which has already brought the first unit of its 1,000 MW Tehri PSP online. With multiple feasibility and project reports underway, the company is laying the foundation for long-term energy security, stable returns, and climate-aligned infrastructure.

NTPC’s Strategic Push into Pumped Storage

In a decisive move to fortify India’s renewable energy infrastructure, NTPC Group is developing a robust pipeline of pumped storage projects totaling 20 gigawatts (GW) across various regions. These projects are being executed by NTPC and its hydro-focused subsidiaries, reflecting a strategic shift toward flexible, clean energy solutions that can balance intermittent renewable sources such as solar and wind.

The company aims to commission between 3 GW to 5 GW of this capacity by the fiscal year 2031–32. This significant expansion will augment India's energy storage capability, ensuring system reliability during peak demand periods and strengthening grid stability.

Tehri PSP: A Milestone for NTPC’s Hydro Ambitions

One of the most advanced developments in this initiative is the Tehri Pumped Storage Project in Uttarakhand, operated by NTPC subsidiary THDC India. The plant has a capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW), composed of four units of 250 MW each. Earlier this month, the first unit began commercial electricity supply, marking a major milestone in the group’s pumped storage ambitions.

Full commissioning of the Tehri PSP is expected in FY2025–26. Once operational, the facility will provide critical load-balancing support to the grid while aligning with India's broader energy transition objectives.

Financial and Strategic Rationale for PSP Expansion

Pumped storage projects are considered vital infrastructure for a low-carbon energy future. With operational lifespans exceeding 40 years, these assets offer consistent regulated returns while reducing dependency on fossil fuel-based peaking power plants.

A senior NTPC official highlighted the value proposition: “These projects deliver both economic and strategic benefits—long-term revenue stability, improved grid flexibility, and enhanced alignment with national climate commitments.”

The PSPs will also serve as essential complements to NTPC’s growing renewable portfolio, enabling higher penetration of variable renewable energy by mitigating intermittency and stabilizing power supply during off-peak production.

Project Development Pipeline and Feasibility Progress

NTPC is moving decisively from concept to implementation. The company has completed preliminary feasibility reports for 18 pumped storage projects across the country. Additionally, detailed project reports (DPRs) for four of these are in advanced stages of preparation, indicating strong forward momentum in execution planning.

This layered development pipeline positions NTPC to scale up its energy storage footprint substantially over the next decade, aligning operational capabilities with India's projected renewable energy targets under the National Electricity Plan and COP commitments.

NTPC’s Expanding Energy Footprint

As of June 13, NTPC Ltd has a standalone commercial generation capacity of 60,266 MW, while the group’s total capacity stands at 81,368 MW. This diverse energy mix includes thermal, solar, and wind assets, making NTPC the backbone of India’s power sector—contributing approximately 25% of the nation's electricity requirements.

By integrating large-scale energy storage through PSPs, NTPC is future-proofing its infrastructure against evolving market dynamics, regulatory expectations, and consumer demands.

Conclusion: A Forward-Looking Bet on Grid Resilience

NTPC’s 20 GW pumped storage roadmap is more than just a capacity addition—it is a forward-looking strategy to bolster India’s grid against volatility, accommodate rising renewable integration, and safeguard long-term energy security. As the nation pivots toward a cleaner, more sustainable power landscape, NTPC’s proactive stance reinforces its leadership in shaping India’s energy future.
