Powering Progress: How a Renewable Energy Pivot Could Lift 193 Million Out of Poverty and Save Trillions

A groundbreaking report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the University of Denver’s Pardee Institute and Octopus Energy, outlines a transformative vision for the global energy future. The study finds that if countries align renewable energy deployment with broader development policies, it could lift 193 million people out of extreme poverty by 2060 and save the global economy USD 20.4 trillion. The findings stem from three modeled scenarios, with the most ambitious one offering dramatic gains in health, education, income, and climate resilience—while also driving substantial GDP growth and energy savings.

A Global Crossroads: Energy Policy Meets Human Development

As the world navigates a critical juncture in climate and development policy, the latest UNDP report sends an urgent yet hopeful message: renewable energy, if implemented in tandem with inclusive development strategies, can be a powerful tool for socioeconomic transformation. The study evaluates three divergent energy futures and quantifies the corresponding impact on emissions, public welfare, and economic performance over the next 35 years.

In stark contrast to the business-as-usual pathway, where fossil fuels remain dominant and poverty intensifies, the report demonstrates that clean energy can unlock vast improvements in human development—if accompanied by coordinated investments in public services and infrastructure.

Three Futures: Fossil Dependence vs. Renewable Ambition

The report simulates three global energy scenarios through 2060:

  1. Business-as-Usual (BAU):
    Fossil fuels continue to supply more than half of global energy. This trajectory would lead to a temperature increase of 2.6°C, pushing millions further into poverty and jeopardizing access to basic services such as electricity, sanitation, and clean water.
  2. Accelerated Renewables:
    This path aligns with the global call to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency. Fossil fuels drop to just 12% of the global mix by 2060, limiting temperature rise to below 2°C. While this yields environmental gains, it does not fully maximize social or economic outcomes.
  3. Integrated Climate and Development Strategy:
    The most transformative scenario combines renewable energy expansion with systemic investments in health, education, food systems, and water infrastructure. This pathway not only achieves universal electricity and clean cooking access, but also:
    • Lifts 193 million people out of extreme poverty.
    • Prevents 142 million cases of malnutrition.
    • Grants 550 million individuals access to safe water and sanitation.
    • Boosts global GDP by 21%.
    • Raises per capita income by USD 6,000.
    • Unlocks USD 20.4 trillion in cumulative savings.

The Cost-Benefit Case for Renewable Transformation

One of the study’s most compelling revelations is the economic feasibility of an integrated climate-development model. By 2060, global savings would include:

  • USD 8.9 trillion in energy efficiency gains.
  • USD 11.5 trillion from decreasing renewable energy costs.

These financial benefits come alongside a clean energy infrastructure buildout that not only curbs emissions but also underpins job creation, productivity growth, and improved public health outcomes.

Cassie Flynn, UNDP’s Global Director for Climate Change, emphasized that “a clean energy future is not just desirable—it’s within reach, provided we align ambition with inclusive policies.”

Clean Energy Momentum Is Real, But So Are Headwinds

The clean energy sector is witnessing unprecedented growth. In 2025, renewable capacity is projected to reach 4,448 GW, accounting for over 90% of new power installations. Investments in clean energy are expected to set a record USD 2.2 trillion, underscoring the sector’s momentum.

However, fossil fuels continue to dominate global energy supply, making up over 70% of total energy production. In 2024 alone, fossil fuels were responsible for more than half of the 2.2% growth in global energy demand. Compounding the challenge, energy efficiency improvements have slowed significantly compared to previous decades.

These indicators reflect the urgency of rethinking existing policy frameworks and aligning investment flows with long-term sustainability goals.

A Call to Action: From Potential to Policy

Jonathan Moyer, Director of the Pardee Institute, urged policymakers to act on the findings: “This research proves it is possible to balance development with environmental protection—if leaders make informed, courageous decisions.”

Octopus Energy’s founder Greg Jackson echoed the sentiment, pointing to the enormous development potential of electrification: “Renewables offer the chance to bring electricity to hundreds of millions, transforming lives and propelling growth.”

The study is not merely a forecast—it is a policy blueprint. It urges global leaders to:

  • Embed climate goals within broader development agendas.
  • Prioritize investments in human capital alongside clean infrastructure.
  • Adopt regulatory frameworks that reward long-term sustainability over short-term returns.

Conclusion: A Choice Between Degeneration and Regeneration

The world faces a binary choice: sustain an extractive energy system that deepens inequality and accelerates climate breakdown, or embrace a renewable-led, development-centric future that elevates human dignity and economic stability.

The UNDP study offers not only data but direction—affirming that with political will, coordinated policy, and inclusive planning, we can build a cleaner, fairer, and more resilient world by 2060.
