India’s Electronics Manufacturing Surges Fivefold, Cementing Its Role in the Global Supply Chain

By Manbir Sandhu , 20 April 2025

India’s electronics sector is witnessing an unprecedented boom, driven by robust policy support, strategic investments, and expanding global trust in Made-in-India products. According to Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the industry has grown fivefold in the past decade, with domestic manufacturing reaching Rs. 11 lakh crore and exports surpassing Rs. 3.25 lakh crore. The surge has created over 25 lakh jobs and positioned India as a credible, innovation-driven hub for high-tech components and systems. From AI-powered surveillance devices to telecom and power electronics, Indian design and manufacturing capabilities are gaining significant global traction.

Electronics Manufacturing: A Decade of Transformational Growth

India’s electronics manufacturing industry has seen meteoric growth over the past ten years, rising from a nascent base to a Rs. 11 lakh crore industrial powerhouse. This transformation reflects the impact of targeted government initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, favorable taxation frameworks, and focused support for infrastructure development across key tech clusters. The recent inauguration of VVDN Technologies’ Surface Mount Technology (SMT) line at Manesar marks a symbolic and strategic milestone, underscoring how domestic capabilities have matured in both scale and sophistication.

Export Growth Outpaces Expectations Amid Global Demand

Parallel to domestic manufacturing, India’s electronics exports have also grown exponentially—rising sixfold in the past decade to over Rs. 3.25 lakh crore. This growth is a clear indicator of India's evolving position in the global electronics supply chain, particularly in categories like consumer electronics, embedded systems, telecom hardware, and industrial automation components. This surge is not solely volume-based. Indian electronics products are gaining credibility for their quality, reliability, and adherence to global standards, including intellectual property compliance—an often overlooked but vital factor in cross-border technology trade.

Design-Led Innovation: India’s Strategic Edge

One of the most compelling drivers of India’s electronics revolution is its design prowess. According to the minister, India is no longer just a hub for assembly or low-cost production. The country is now actively designing and developing high-complexity products such as AI-integrated cameras, automotive control systems, and advanced telecom infrastructure equipment. This capability shift—from manufacturing to design-led innovation—has profound implications. It elevates India’s position from a cost arbitrage destination to a knowledge economy with competitive intellectual capital. It also opens the door for greater upstream integration, including in semiconductors, printed circuit boards (PCBs), and electronic sub-assemblies.

Job Creation and Skill Development: A 25-Lakh Workforce Surge

With industry expansion has come a substantial increase in employment. The sector has generated approximately 25 lakh jobs, encompassing not just factory-floor roles, but also high-skilled positions in hardware engineering, product design, systems integration, and supply chain management. These opportunities have been amplified by skill development initiatives and vocational training programs tailored to the electronics sector. As India looks to increase its share of global electronics manufacturing, workforce readiness will remain a cornerstone of sustained growth.

Component Ecosystem and New Incentives: Building Supply Chain Depth

In a significant policy move, the Union Cabinet has recently approved new incentives for electronics components manufacturing. This marks a deliberate effort to deepen India’s supply chain ecosystem, reduce import dependencies, and enable full-stack manufacturing. The inclusion of component manufacturing in the incentive framework will allow India to better withstand global disruptions, reduce lead times, and enhance the competitiveness of its end-products. In effect, it moves India closer to becoming a self-sustaining, vertically integrated electronics manufacturing destination.

Global Perception: Trust, IP Respect, and Reliability as Catalysts

As India’s reputation grows, global firms are increasingly looking to Indian companies as reliable partners for long-term collaboration. Vaishnaw emphasized that India’s commitment to intellectual property rights is enhancing its standing as a trustworthy destination—particularly vital in high-stakes industries like telecommunications, defense electronics, and medical devices. This focus on IP compliance, combined with quality assurance and competitive pricing, positions Indian firms to play a more strategic role in reshaping global electronics supply chains—especially in the context of the US-China tech decoupling and the broader reshoring movement.

Conclusion: India’s Electronics Sector Is Entering Its Golden Decade

What was once a fledgling industry is now poised to become a cornerstone of India’s economic growth story. The intersection of policy clarity, technical talent, and rising global trust has created a virtuous cycle in the electronics sector. If this momentum continues—supported by consistent infrastructure investment and R&D funding—India could not only meet its domestic tech needs but also emerge as a global design-to-delivery leader in electronics.
