REC Reports Marginal Q3 Profit Decline Amid Stable Lending Performance

By Kirti Srinivasan , 30 January 2026

State-owned power sector financier REC Ltd. reported a modest decline in net profit for the third quarter, with earnings easing to Rs 4,052.44 crore. The performance reflects a period of normalization following strong gains in previous quarters, even as the company maintained steady loan growth and asset quality. While higher provisions and tighter margins weighed slightly on profitability, REC’s core lending operations remained resilient. The results underscore the lender’s stable fundamentals and its continued role in financing India’s power and infrastructure expansion, amid a cautiously evolving credit environment.

Q3 Financial Performance at a Glance

REC’s net profit for the December quarter slipped marginally to Rs 4,052.44 crore, compared with the year-ago period. The decline was largely attributed to higher provisioning and moderation in income growth, rather than any structural weakness in the loan book.

Despite the dip, analysts described the performance as stable, noting that earnings remain robust by historical standards.

Loan Growth and Asset Quality Remain Steady

The company continued to register healthy loan disbursements, driven by sustained demand from the power generation, transmission and renewable energy segments. Asset quality indicators remained largely stable, reflecting prudent credit appraisal and recovery mechanisms.

REC’s focus on government-backed and infrastructure-linked projects has helped contain credit risk in a volatile macroeconomic environment.

Margins and Provisioning Pressures

Net interest margins faced mild pressure during the quarter amid changes in funding costs and competitive lending rates. In addition, provisioning levels increased, reflecting a conservative approach toward risk management and regulatory compliance.

Management indicated that such measures are intended to strengthen balance-sheet resilience over the medium term.

Strategic Role in Power Sector Financing

REC continues to play a central role in funding India’s power sector transition, including investments in renewable energy, grid modernization and distribution reforms. Policy support and long-term visibility in infrastructure spending remain key growth drivers for the lender.

The company’s alignment with national energy priorities provides a degree of earnings stability despite short-term fluctuations.

Outlook: Stability Over Short-Term Volatility

Looking ahead, REC is expected to focus on sustaining asset quality, optimizing funding costs and supporting priority infrastructure projects. While near-term profitability may reflect incremental pressures, the lender’s strong balance sheet and predictable loan pipeline offer confidence.

The Q3 profit dip appears more cyclical than structural, reinforcing REC’s position as a steady, long-term player in India’s infrastructure financing landscape.
