As India accelerates its transition to sustainable mobility, the National Highways for Electric Vehicles (NHEV) initiative has made a significant stride by acquiring 4.7 acres in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, to develop a next-generation 3G electric vehicle (EV) charging station. In a major step toward electrifying Indian highways, NHEV has acquired 4.7 acres of land in Tirunelveli for the development of a 3G EV charging station. Located along the vital Kanyakumari-Madurai highway corridor, this facility marks the first charging hub under the South Zone rollout and the second on this key route. The strategic placement not only addresses the rising demand for EV infrastructure but also complements ongoing efforts to upgrade India's logistics corridors with clean energy solutions.
Part of India’s Ambitious 5,500 km EV Corridor Rollout
This acquisition is one element of the expansive plan to build a 5,500-kilometer nationwide network of 3G charging stations, following policy guidance issued by the Estimate Committee of the 17th Lok Sabha. The NHEV program, backed by the central government and spearheaded by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, is a critical component of India’s national strategy to reduce carbon emissions and stimulate electric vehicle adoption at scale.
Private Partnerships and Technical Trials Fueling Growth
The new station builds upon the momentum generated by the Chennai-Trichy Technical Trial III, which featured Ashok Leyland electric trucks and Blue Energy Motors’ LNG trucks. These successful trials underscore the technical viability and commercial potential of freight electrification. Project Director Abhijeet Sinha highlighted the strong response from individuals and private firms willing to lease land, enabling rapid deployment of EV charging infrastructure. “After evaluating multiple pledged land parcels, we concluded our final assessment and began preparing for on-site construction and testing," Sinha noted.
A Logistics Hub in the Making
According to the company, the Tirunelveli site is poised to become a logistics charging hub, given its proximity to key freight corridors and ports in Tamil Nadu. The goal is to create a multi-use facility that supports trucks, buses, and other commercial EVs, boosting supply chain efficiency across southern India. With this site being the fifth designated freight route in the state under NHEV, it reflects the growing momentum of India's electric logistics ecosystem.
Collaboration with Industry Stakeholders
The land for the Tirunelveli charging station was pledged by Maaya Autobahn, whose Managing Director, R. Harish Babu, confirmed the commencement of pre-construction activities such as soil testing, site surveying, and asset valuation. "The site will now be opened to NHEV partners for final project planning and infrastructure execution," he stated, signaling a robust public-private collaboration in driving India’s EV transformation.
