SEBI Introduces New Framework for Closing Stock Prices to Enhance Market Transparency

By Dipali , 20 January 2026

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has unveiled a new regulatory framework for determining closing stock prices, aimed at improving transparency, accuracy, and investor confidence in equity markets. The revised mechanism seeks to standardise end-of-day pricing by incorporating robust methodologies for price calculation and reducing manipulation risks. SEBI’s move addresses concerns over volatility and artificial price distortions in illiquid or thinly traded stocks. Analysts expect the framework to strengthen market integrity, provide a fair benchmark for derivatives and mutual fund valuations, and support more reliable pricing for investors and regulators alike.

Objective of the New Framework

SEBI’s initiative is designed to establish a uniform methodology for calculating the daily closing price of listed securities. The framework targets enhanced transparency, particularly for low-liquidity stocks, and aims to minimise anomalies that can impact derivative settlements, mutual fund NAVs, and investor decision-making.

Methodology and Implementation

The framework introduces systematic rules for end-of-day price computation, including weighted average price mechanisms, volume-based adjustments, and safeguards against price manipulation. Stock exchanges will implement the methodology with real-time monitoring and reporting to ensure consistency across the market.

Impact on Market Participants

Investors, mutual funds, and derivative traders are expected to benefit from more reliable closing prices, which serve as benchmarks for portfolio valuation and risk management. Enhanced pricing accuracy also aids institutional investors in executing strategies that rely on precise end-of-day valuations.

Regulatory and Compliance Implications

Market intermediaries and exchanges will need to adhere strictly to SEBI’s guidelines, incorporating updated reporting standards and compliance protocols. This is expected to reduce regulatory arbitrage and strengthen overall market governance.

Outlook

SEBI’s new framework signals a proactive approach to market transparency and integrity. By standardising closing price calculations, the regulator aims to foster investor confidence, ensure fair valuations, and reinforce India’s position as a credible, well-regulated capital market globally.
