SEBI Bets on AI and Advanced Technology to Strengthen Market Surveillance

By Dipali , 27 February 2026

India’s market regulator is stepping up the use of artificial intelligence and advanced technology to enhance surveillance across capital markets, aiming to detect manipulation, insider trading and systemic risks more effectively. The initiative reflects a strategic shift toward data-driven oversight as trading volumes, product complexity and retail participation continue to rise. By leveraging AI-led analytics, the regulator intends to move from reactive enforcement to predictive supervision. Officials say technology-driven monitoring will improve market integrity, protect investors and reinforce confidence in India’s financial system, even as markets grow faster and more interconnected.

Technology Takes Center Stage in Regulation

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has outlined plans to significantly expand the use of artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics in its surveillance framework. The move is designed to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated trading strategies and the growing scale of market activity.

Regulatory officials said traditional monitoring tools are no longer sufficient to track complex patterns across equities, derivatives and other asset classes.

From Detection to Prediction

AI-based systems allow regulators to analyze vast volumes of trading data in real time, identifying unusual behavior that may indicate market abuse. Unlike rule-based systems, machine-learning models adapt continuously, improving accuracy as new data becomes available.

SEBI officials noted that this shift enables earlier detection of potential violations, reducing the time between misconduct and regulatory intervention.

Protecting Investors and Market Integrity

Enhanced surveillance is expected to strengthen investor protection by curbing practices such as price manipulation, front-running and insider trading. With retail participation at record levels, timely detection of irregular activity has become critical to maintaining trust in the market.

Experts said AI-led oversight can also help reduce false alarms, allowing regulators to focus resources on genuinely high-risk cases.

Managing Systemic Risk in Expanding Markets

As India’s capital markets deepen and new instruments gain popularity, regulators face the challenge of monitoring interconnected risks. Advanced technology can map linkages across participants, products and platforms, helping identify vulnerabilities before they escalate.

This capability is particularly important during periods of heightened volatility, when rapid response is essential.

Global Alignment and Future Readiness

SEBI’s push mirrors global regulatory trends, with market watchdogs worldwide investing in regulatory technology to improve efficiency and transparency. Analysts said such initiatives position India’s markets as well-regulated and globally competitive.

The Road Ahead

While technology will not replace human judgment, SEBI officials emphasized that AI will act as a force multiplier for supervision and enforcement. As markets evolve, the regulator’s message is clear: smarter technology will be central to safeguarding fair, orderly and transparent trading in the years ahead.
