Delhi Braces for Widespread Rainfall as Monsoon Intensifies Across NCR

By Nimrat , 6 July 2025

Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms, over the next several hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the capital, forecasting a maximum temperature of around 34°C and a minimum near 29°C. Areas including Pitampura, Lajpat Nagar, and Model Town are likely to see showers, while the broader NCR—spanning Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad, and Gurugram—has also been placed on weather watch. The monsoon trough currently passing through northern India is driving this widespread weather activity.

Monsoon Trough Triggers Regional Rainfall

The IMD has attributed the active weather conditions to a well-established monsoon trough at mean sea level. This atmospheric feature currently extends through Delhi, Lucknow, Varanasi, Daltonganj, and further southeast to the Bay of Bengal. The trough has intensified rainfall across northern and eastern India, enhancing moisture inflow and instability in the region.

Delhi's forecast includes light to moderate showers throughout Sunday, with intermittent thunder and lightning expected in both the afternoon and evening hours. The rain is expected to bring temporary relief from prevailing heat and may contribute to improved air quality levels.

Targeted Alerts Across Delhi and NCR

Specific localities in Delhi—including Burari, Bawana, Kalkaji, Vivek Vihar, Civil Lines, Shahadra, and Rohini—have been identified for possible rainfall in the immediate term. NCR regions such as Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Noida, Dadri, Greater Noida, Ballabhgarh, and Faridabad are also on alert for moderate rainfall within a two-hour window.

In addition, weather warnings have been extended to nearby districts in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Cities like Loni Dehat, Chhapraula, and Manesar may also receive isolated rain accompanied by brief thunderstorms.

Temperature and Air Quality Outlook

Delhi is expected to record a high of approximately 34°C and a low of 29°C on Sunday. These figures align with seasonal averages during peak monsoon periods but could drop marginally in the wake of persistent cloud cover and precipitation.

On the air quality front, the capital saw an encouraging start to the day. At 9 a.m., the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 82, placing the city in the ‘satisfactory’ category. This improvement is likely aided by consistent rainfall, which helps wash away pollutants and settle airborne particulates.

Infrastructure and Commuter Considerations

While monsoon showers provide welcome relief from heat and pollution, they can pose operational challenges. Authorities are advised to monitor waterlogging hotspots, traffic flow disruption, and the condition of drainage systems. Commuters are encouraged to factor in potential delays, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas of the city.

The IMD has reiterated that the current spell is part of a larger seasonal pattern and has urged residents to remain cautious and follow official updates. The yellow alert indicates moderately severe conditions that warrant attention but are not considered life-threatening under normal circumstances.

Outlook Ahead

As the monsoon continues to establish itself across northern India, weather variability is expected to persist through the coming week. Forecast models suggest continued rainfall across Delhi-NCR, with further cooling of temperatures likely. Agricultural zones in surrounding states may benefit from the precipitation, aiding crop cycles and water table replenishment.
