Dense Fog Disrupts Air Traffic as 129 Flights Are Cancelled at Delhi Airport

Severe fog conditions in the national capital led to widespread disruption at Indira Gandhi International Airport, forcing the cancellation of 129 flights and causing delays across domestic and international operations. The weather-related setback once again highlighted the vulnerability of aviation schedules to seasonal winter fog in North India. Airlines were compelled to ground several services as visibility levels dropped sharply, affecting both departures and arrivals. Airport authorities activated low-visibility procedures, while carriers worked to accommodate stranded passengers. The incident underscores the operational challenges faced by India’s busiest airport during winter months and raises questions about long-term mitigation strategies.

Fog Brings Operations to a Standstill

Delhi Airport witnessed significant operational strain as dense fog enveloped the region, sharply reducing visibility during early morning hours. According to airport officials, conditions fell below minimum visibility thresholds required for safe aircraft movement, prompting airlines to cancel multiple flights rather than risk prolonged ground delays or diversions.

The disruption affected a mix of domestic and international routes, with early departures bearing the brunt of the impact. While some services were delayed in anticipation of improving weather, others were cancelled outright due to crew duty limitations and cascading schedule disruptions.

Airlines Scramble to Manage Passenger Impact

Airlines operating out of Delhi moved quickly to inform passengers and manage the fallout. Many carriers offered rebooking options, fare waivers, or refunds in line with regulatory guidelines. However, the sheer scale of cancellations led to congestion at terminals as travelers sought assistance at airline counters.

Industry executives noted that fog-related disruptions often create a domino effect, impacting aircraft availability and crew rotations throughout the day. As a result, even flights scheduled for later hours faced delays, extending the disruption well beyond the period of poor visibility.

Low-Visibility Procedures and Infrastructure Readiness

Indira Gandhi International Airport is equipped with advanced landing systems designed to support operations during low-visibility conditions. However, the effectiveness of these systems depends on aircraft compatibility and crew training. Not all flights are cleared to operate under the lowest visibility categories, limiting operational flexibility during extreme fog.

Airport authorities confirmed that standard low-visibility procedures were implemented, including increased spacing between aircraft movements and enhanced coordination with air traffic control. These measures, while necessary for safety, inevitably reduce runway capacity.

Seasonal Challenge for India’s Busiest Airport

Winter fog has long been a recurring challenge for Delhi’s aviation ecosystem. Despite infrastructure upgrades over the years, including improved runway lighting and navigation systems, weather disruptions remain difficult to fully mitigate.

Aviation analysts argue that better schedule planning, greater deployment of fog-capable aircraft, and improved passenger communication could help reduce the impact. However, they acknowledge that safety considerations will always take precedence over operational efficiency.

Looking Ahead

The cancellation of 129 flights serves as a reminder of the fragile balance between weather, technology, and capacity at major aviation hubs. As passenger traffic continues to grow, the need for resilient systems and coordinated response mechanisms becomes increasingly critical. For now, airlines and airport operators must continue to navigate the winter fog season with caution, prioritizing safety while striving to minimize inconvenience for travelers.
