Former Punjab Minister Bikram Singh Majithia Arrested in Fresh Disproportionate Assets Case Amid Political Tensions

In a significant escalation of legal troubles for Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested the former state minister on Wednesday in connection with a fresh case related to disproportionate assets. The arrest follows raids on 25 properties across Punjab, triggered by findings linked to an ongoing drug-trafficking investigation dating back to 2021. Majithia, who was previously out on bail in a high-profile narcotics case, has called the latest action politically motivated. The developments have intensified tensions between the opposition SAD and the ruling AAP-led state government.

Vigilance Bureau Acts on Disproportionate Assets Allegations

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrested senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia at his Amritsar residence on Wednesday morning after registering a new First Information Report (FIR) under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The FIR was filed based on alleged financial discrepancies uncovered during an ongoing probe into a 2021 drug-trafficking case.

A senior VB official confirmed that Majithia’s home was among 25 properties raided across Punjab, with nine of them located in Amritsar district. “A formal statement will follow,” the official said, noting that the arrested leader would be produced before the Amritsar district court by 3 PM.

The arrest is rooted in documents and transactions that officials say reveal asset accumulation inconsistent with declared income. These findings, they argue, necessitated action under anti-corruption laws.

Background: The 2021 Drug Case and Bail Conditions

Majithia, a prominent figure in Punjab politics and the brother-in-law of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, has long been embroiled in controversy. In 2021, he was booked under Sections 25, 27A, and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, accused of facilitating drug networks by providing financial and logistical support to key figures like Jagdish Bhola and Maninder Singh Aulakh.

He was arrested in February 2022 and remained in judicial custody for several months before being granted regular bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in August 2022. The Supreme Court upheld his bail in April 2025 but imposed stringent restrictions, including a gag order on public commentary and any attempt to influence witnesses.

Most recently, in March 2025, he was questioned by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) about alleged hawala transactions and suspicious financial links to narcotics syndicates, further intensifying scrutiny on his finances.

Majithia Responds: Claims Political Vendetta

Following Wednesday’s arrest, Majithia took to social media to decry the VB's action as politically orchestrated. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “When the Bhagwant Mann government failed to prove anything in the drug case, they created a new one. No matter how many cases they file, I will not be intimidated. My voice will not be silenced.”

He asserted that he remained committed to raising public issues and expressed unwavering faith in divine justice. His statement portrayed the VB’s action as a politically motivated attempt to damage his credibility and suppress dissent.

Family Reacts as SAD Rallies Support

Majithia’s wife, Ganieve Kaur, the sitting SAD MLA from Majitha, strongly condemned the VB's operation. Speaking to reporters, she described the early morning raid as an “invasion” of their private residence. “Thirty officials forced their way in just as we were preparing to leave for the Golden Temple,” she said, accusing the government of targeting their family.

The developments triggered an immediate response from SAD supporters. By midday, party workers had begun gathering outside Majithia’s residence, which was soon cordoned off by police commandos and secured with barricades to prevent unrest.

Legal and Political Implications

The arrest of a senior opposition figure amid ongoing probes and multiple FIRs raises fresh questions about the intersection of governance and political rivalry in Punjab. The VB insists the action is a result of concrete evidence, not political vendetta. However, critics within SAD and other opposition circles argue that the timing and manner of the arrest reflect broader efforts to suppress dissent.

If the charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act hold, Majithia could face a long legal battle—possibly derailing his political trajectory. Conversely, if proven politically motivated, the move could backfire on the ruling AAP government, especially ahead of key electoral cycles.

Conclusion: A Battle Beyond the Courtroom

Bikram Singh Majithia’s arrest reopens long-standing fissures in Punjab’s political landscape, where legal charges and political vendettas are often intertwined. Whether this move signifies a deeper clampdown on corruption or a misuse of investigative machinery remains to be tested in court. For now, it has become a flashpoint that underscores the highly polarized and volatile nature of Punjab’s state politics.
