Amit Shah Declares NDA Victory in Tamil Nadu, Launches Scathing Attacks on DMK Corruption

By Gurleen Bajwa , 9 June 2025

Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphatically predicted the NDA’s triumph in Tamil Nadu’s 2026 Assembly elections while launching a series of corruption allegations against the ruling DMK government. Speaking at a BJP Karyakarta Sammelan in Madurai, Shah highlighted scandals including the ₹4,600 crore sand mining case and the ₹39,775 crore TASMAC liquor scam, accusing the DMK of neglecting vulnerable populations and mismanaging public funds. He challenged Chief Minister M K Stalin’s governance record and manifesto delivery, forecasting that a BJP-AIADMK coalition will usher in political change, aligning Tamil Nadu with recent NDA successes across India.

Shah’s Confidence in NDA’s Tamil Nadu Prospects

Addressing BJP volunteers in Madurai, Union Home Minister Amit Shah articulated a resolute vision of political transformation in Tamil Nadu, branding the city as a “city of Parivartan” (change). Drawing on his extensive electoral experience, Shah asserted that the electorate is poised to reject the DMK government, positioning the NDA as the vehicle of reform and development. He confidently forecasted the BJP-AIADMK alliance’s emergence as the state’s next ruling coalition, citing the momentum from NDA victories in Odisha, Haryana, Delhi, and Maharashtra as indicative of a broader national realignment.

Accusations of Corruption and Governance Failures

Shah delivered pointed accusations against the DMK leadership, describing a series of financial scandals that have allegedly compromised governance and public welfare. Central among these is the ₹39,775 crore TASMAC liquor scam, currently under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate, which Shah contended could have funded critical educational infrastructure such as two classrooms in every primary school across Tamil Nadu. He further lambasted the ruling party for a ₹4,600 crore sand mining scandal that purportedly inflicted significant harm on marginalized communities.

The Home Minister also targeted a ₹450 crore nutrition-kit initiative, alleging it was entangled in corruption due to contracts awarded to private entities without transparent oversight. Shah linked these governance lapses to increased illegal liquor sales, underscoring public safety failures highlighted by the tragic Kallakurichi hooch deaths that claimed 66 lives.

Political Challenge to the DMK

In a direct confrontation, Shah challenged Chief Minister M K Stalin to publicly account for the DMK’s 2021 election promises, accusing the government of fulfilling less than 60% of its manifesto commitments. Shah contended that the incumbent administration’s neglect of vulnerable populations—including women, children, and the economically disadvantaged—has eroded public trust and intensified social inequities.

Responding to Stalin’s retort that only the people of Tamil Nadu, not Shah, could effect political change, the Home Minister maintained that his understanding of voter sentiment equips him to predict electoral outcomes accurately.

Central Government’s Contributions and Tamil Nadu’s Place

Shah emphasized the NDA government’s investments in Tamil Nadu, noting that the Centre has allocated Rs 6.80 lakh crore over the past decade to fuel the state’s growth. He rebutted Stalin’s inquiries about the Centre’s role by highlighting symbolic gestures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s honoring of Tamil Nadu’s cultural heritage through the placement of the “Sengol” in Parliament, reinforcing the state's significance at the national level.

Outlook Ahead of 2026 Assembly Elections

Looking toward the 2026 Assembly polls, Shah projected a political shift aligning Tamil Nadu with the wave of NDA successes across other key states. He expressed optimism that this momentum would catalyse “transformation” not only in Tamil Nadu but also in West Bengal, thereby reshaping India’s political landscape.

Conclusion:
Amit Shah’s recent address in Madurai underscores the BJP’s strategic focus on Tamil Nadu, marked by sharp critiques of the DMK government’s alleged corruption and governance deficits. With the 2026 elections approaching, the BJP-AIADMK alliance aims to capitalize on these narratives and broader national trends to secure a decisive mandate. The unfolding political contest promises to be a defining moment for Tamil Nadu’s future governance and development trajectory.
