Experts Refute Claims Linking Covid-19 Vaccines to Sudden Cardiac Deaths in Karnataka

By Gurminder Mangat , 4 July 2025

Medical experts and industry leaders have strongly dismissed recent claims made by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah that suggested a link between Covid-19 vaccinations and sudden cardiac deaths in Hassan district. Leading doctors from AIIMS Delhi clarified that comprehensive studies found no causal association between the vaccines and such fatalities. Biocon’s founder and the Serum Institute of India (SII) echoed these findings, emphasizing the rigorous scientific protocols behind vaccine approvals and reaffirming their safety. This collective response seeks to quell misinformation and reinforce public confidence in India’s Covid-19 vaccination programme.

Medical Experts Dismiss Vaccine-Death Correlation

At a press conference, Dr. Karan Madan, Associate Professor in Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, categorically rejected the notion of a direct link between Covid-19 vaccines and sudden cardiac deaths reported in Hassan district. Highlighting the extensive vaccination campaign, Dr. Madan reiterated that vaccines were instrumental in curbing mortality during the pandemic’s peak.

“Covid vaccines have been remarkably effective in saving lives,” he stated. “Although millions received these vaccines, no conclusive evidence has emerged to connect them with sudden cardiac deaths. A focused study examining such fatalities found no clear association.”

His remarks underline the critical role vaccines played in reducing excess deaths and stress the importance of evaluating such claims through rigorous scientific investigation rather than speculation.

Industry Leaders Condemn Misinformation

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Executive Chairperson of Biocon, promptly refuted the Karnataka CM’s assertions on social media, calling them “factually incorrect” and “misleading.” Shaw emphasized that Indian Covid-19 vaccines were authorized under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) frameworks, which adhered to global standards for safety and efficacy.

“To label these vaccines as hastily approved undermines the exhaustive scientific processes involved,” Shaw wrote. “These vaccines have saved millions of lives globally. While side effects can occur, they are rare and carefully monitored.”

Her statement underscores the importance of science-driven narratives in public health communication and cautions against retrospective blame that may erode vaccine confidence.

Serum Institute Aligns with Scientific Consensus

The Serum Institute of India (SII), manufacturer of Covishield, also issued an official statement reaffirming the safety of Covid-19 vaccines amidst circulating concerns over sudden deaths in Karnataka.

Referencing government-supported research conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and AIIMS, SII highlighted that no causal relationship has been established between vaccination and heart-related fatalities.

“Scientific evidence consistently supports vaccine safety,” the statement read. “Our findings align with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s conclusions, which are grounded in rigorous scientific scrutiny.”

This affirmation by one of India’s leading vaccine producers aims to dispel doubts and reinforce public trust in the ongoing immunization efforts.

The Broader Context: Vaccine Confidence and Public Health

The controversy arises in a climate where vaccine hesitancy remains a significant challenge to public health outcomes. Assertions like those made by the Karnataka CM risk fueling misinformation, potentially jeopardizing vaccine uptake and the broader fight against Covid-19.

Medical professionals and pharmaceutical leaders advocate for evidence-based discourse, underscoring that vaccines remain a cornerstone in mitigating the pandemic’s impact.

As India continues to navigate post-pandemic recovery, clear, transparent communication rooted in scientific data is paramount to maintaining public confidence and ensuring robust health security.

Conclusion

The collective response from AIIMS Delhi, Biocon, and the Serum Institute firmly rebuffs the notion that Covid-19 vaccines are responsible for sudden cardiac deaths in Karnataka’s Hassan district. Through methodical studies and adherence to international regulatory standards, these vaccines have demonstrated safety and efficacy at scale.

As the nation confronts the dual challenges of pandemic management and public misinformation, such clarifications play a vital role in sustaining trust in India’s immunization programmes and safeguarding the health of millions.
