Government Unveils Fresh Policy Measures to Accelerate India’s Export Growth

By Vrinda Chaturvedi , 31 August 2025

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has announced a series of new measures aimed at boosting India’s exports and strengthening its position in global trade. The initiatives focus on easing regulatory bottlenecks, expanding market access, and providing targeted support to key sectors such as textiles, engineering goods, electronics, and agricultural products. The government also emphasized the importance of diversifying export destinations and leveraging free trade agreements to capture new opportunities. These measures underscore India’s ambition to not only enhance its trade competitiveness but also contribute significantly to its goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy in the coming years.

Strengthening India’s Export Competitiveness

The new measures are designed to enhance India’s export performance at a time when global trade faces headwinds from geopolitical tensions and slowing demand. By prioritizing infrastructure improvements, faster customs clearances, and digital solutions for exporters, the government seeks to reduce transaction costs and improve efficiency across the supply chain.

Additionally, sector-specific incentives and financial support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are expected to expand India’s manufacturing base and strengthen its competitiveness in international markets.

Expanding Market Access

A central focus of the announcement is the diversification of export markets. India aims to reduce over-reliance on traditional partners by expanding into Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. The government highlighted the strategic importance of utilizing recently concluded and ongoing free trade agreements to create new export opportunities.

By strengthening diplomatic and trade engagements, India hopes to secure greater market access for goods ranging from high-value electronics to labor-intensive sectors like textiles and handicrafts.

Support for Key Export Sectors

Special emphasis has been placed on sectors that hold high potential for driving export growth. Engineering goods, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products have been identified as priority areas. Targeted initiatives such as export facilitation centers, production-linked incentive schemes, and technology adoption programs will provide the necessary ecosystem for sustained growth.

These measures are also aligned with India’s push for self-reliance under the “Make in India” initiative, ensuring that domestic industries not only meet internal demand but also compete effectively abroad.

Addressing Trade Barriers

The government acknowledged that Indian exporters continue to face challenges such as non-tariff barriers, compliance requirements, and logistics bottlenecks in certain markets. To address these, a dedicated task force will work on resolving trade disputes, streamlining documentation, and ensuring smoother integration into global value chains.

Efforts are also underway to strengthen export financing, giving businesses greater liquidity and stability in uncertain global markets.

Conclusion: Paving the Way for Global Leadership

The newly announced measures by Minister Piyush Goyal represent more than short-term trade support—they are part of a broader vision to make India a global export powerhouse. By combining policy reforms, market diversification, and sectoral focus, the government is laying the groundwork for sustainable and inclusive growth in external trade.

If executed effectively, these initiatives could significantly enhance India’s share in global exports, strengthen economic resilience, and accelerate progress toward the nation’s long-term developmental goals.
