Heavy Monsoon Rains Trigger Widespread Flooding and Landslide Risks in Kerala

By Amrita Bhatia , 27 June 2025

The monsoon season in Kerala has intensified, leading to severe waterlogging, rising river levels, and widespread disruption in districts such as Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alerts across several districts, forecasting heavy rains and potential flash floods. As water levels in key rivers like the Periyar, Muvattupuzha, and Bharathapuzha surge, authorities have issued warnings for landslides and advised the public to stay alert. The state government has called for increased vigilance and advised against venturing into vulnerable regions, especially near water bodies and hilly areas.

Monsoon Intensifies in Kerala: A Growing Concern

On Thursday, Kerala witnessed a sharp intensification of the monsoon, which led to severe waterlogging in multiple low-lying areas, particularly in the districts of Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur. The persistent rains, accompanied by strong winds, have wreaked havoc on daily life, uprooting trees, and toppling billboards across the state, including in parts of the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several regions on Friday, warning of very heavy rainfall, ranging between 11–20 cm, in districts such as Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, and Idukki. The heightened weather conditions, including the forecast for continued heavy rainfall, have raised concerns about flooding and other weather-related hazards across Kerala.

Rising River Levels and Flooding: A State on High Alert

The state's irrigation department has raised alarms over rising water levels in several major rivers. Authorities are closely monitoring rivers like the Periyar, Muvattupuzha, Bharathapuzha, Achankovil, and Pamba, which are swelling dangerously due to the persistent rainfall. Local officials have expressed concern that these swollen rivers could overflow, inundating nearby low-lying areas and displacing even more residents.

In particular, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Idukki have already been affected by localized flooding, with numerous families being relocated to relief camps. The continuous rain and rising water levels have made the situation particularly dire in these regions. Many roads are submerged, disrupting transportation, and the flow of traffic has been severely impacted, further complicating relief efforts.

Risks of Landslides and Damage to Infrastructure

While flooding is a primary concern, the threat of landslides in the Wayanad district has escalated. The region is still recovering from the devastating landslides that struck in July of the previous year, resulting in the loss of over 200 lives and extensive damage to homes. This year, the Chooralmala River in the Mundakkai-Chooralmala area has swollen significantly, posing a new threat to the region’s already fragile infrastructure.

Local authorities in Wayanad have announced the opening of the Banasura Sagar Dam’s spillway, a measure aimed at releasing excess water into the Karamanthodu River, a tributary of the Kabani. The dam will release 50 cubic meters of water per second, which increases the risk of further flooding downstream.

Chief Minister's Warning: A Call for Caution

In light of the heightened risks, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan issued a public warning on social media, urging citizens to stay vigilant. He emphasized the increased risk of landslides and advised people to avoid visiting areas near water bodies or hills, as these regions are particularly vulnerable to the effects of the ongoing heavy rainfall.

Vijayan also urged fishermen to refrain from venturing out to sea, as the strong winds and turbulent waters are expected to persist for the next few days, creating dangerous conditions along the coast.

The Kerala government has emphasized that, in case of any local instructions to evacuate or move to safer locations, residents should comply immediately to avoid any potential loss of life.

IMD Alerts and Ongoing Weather Warnings

In addition to the orange alert for specific districts, the IMD has been providing regular updates on the storm's progress. The IMD's alert system divides the severity of rainfall into three categories: red, orange, and yellow. Red alerts indicate extremely heavy rainfall, exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours, while orange alerts indicate very heavy rainfall between 11–20 cm. Yellow alerts are issued when heavy rainfall between 6–11 cm is expected.

As per the latest updates, orange alerts have been issued for seven districts in Kerala, including Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur, Kozhikode, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta. The weather department's proactive warnings have allowed authorities to mobilize resources for relief and rescue efforts in the affected areas.

Moving Forward: The Need for Preparedness

As Kerala continues to grapple with the devastating impacts of the monsoon rains, the importance of robust disaster preparedness has never been clearer. With major river systems under threat, landslide-prone regions on high alert, and widespread flooding disrupting life, the government’s ability to respond swiftly and efficiently is critical.

This ongoing crisis highlights the pressing need for long-term solutions to combat the effects of climate change, urbanization, and outdated infrastructure. Enhanced flood management systems, improved early warning systems, and better evacuation strategies will be essential to reducing the risk of loss of life and property damage in future disasters.

Conclusion: A State on Edge

Kerala’s residents and officials face a difficult road ahead as the monsoon season progresses. With the rains showing no signs of abating, the state is under constant threat from floods, landslides, and other weather-related disasters. The orange alerts issued by the IMD reflect the growing concerns about the potential risks of these conditions worsening. As the authorities continue their efforts to manage the crisis, the resilience and cooperation of the people of Kerala will be pivotal in navigating through these challenging times.
