UIDAI Extends Free Aadhaar Document Update Facility Until June 2026 to Promote Data Accuracy

By Anant Kumar , 19 June 2025

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended its free online document update facility for Aadhaar holders until June 14, 2026. This initiative, available exclusively through the myAadhaar portal, encourages residents to maintain accurate and current demographic records by uploading valid proof of identity and address documents. The extended deadline aims to benefit millions of Indian citizens by facilitating easy and cost-free access to data updates in the national digital identity system. The move reinforces UIDAI’s push for data integrity, improved service delivery, and streamlined public welfare access through updated Aadhaar credentials.

UIDAI Pushes for Up-to-Date Aadhaar Records

In an important move towards ensuring demographic accuracy in its citizen database, UIDAI has announced an extension of its free document update service through the myAadhaar portal. The facility, initially set for a limited period, will now remain available until June 14, 2026.

The authority has been urging Aadhaar holders to review and update their records, especially in cases where there have been changes in name, address, or other key personal identifiers. This initiative is part of UIDAI’s broader campaign to encourage routine validation of information to avoid discrepancies that could hinder access to essential government and financial services.

Free Document Upload: How It Works

The facility allows users to update demographic information by uploading scanned copies of valid documents, including proof of identity (PoI) and proof of address (PoA), directly on the myAadhaar portal (https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in).

While demographic updates such as name, address, date of birth, and gender are common reasons for changes, the platform is designed to ensure that the update process remains user-friendly and secure. No fee is charged for uploading documents through this online service, making it especially accessible for rural and economically disadvantaged populations.

Importance of Maintaining Updated Aadhaar Data

Aadhaar has become a critical identity layer for India’s digital infrastructure, widely used for accessing banking services, government subsidies, direct benefit transfers (DBT), taxation, pension distribution, and public distribution systems (PDS).

Inaccurate or outdated Aadhaar details can result in failed authentication or denial of service, particularly for individuals relying on subsidies or public welfare. By making the document update process free and online, UIDAI seeks to bridge the digital divide and enable smoother service delivery through authenticated digital identity.

UIDAI’s Broader Vision for Digital Identity

UIDAI’s decision to extend the free document update window is consistent with its long-term digital governance strategy. The authority has continuously emphasized the importance of Aadhaar as a foundational identity, and accurate records are central to its effectiveness.

With nearly 1.4 billion Aadhaar numbers issued to date, maintaining clean and current data is paramount. The document update drive also supports UIDAI’s efforts in refining data-driven public services and minimizing fraud or identity-related errors in welfare distribution.

Final Thoughts: A Step Toward Inclusive Digital Empowerment

This initiative signals UIDAI’s commitment to inclusivity, administrative transparency, and digital access. By removing financial and logistical barriers associated with demographic updates, the authority is helping millions of Indian residents take control of their digital identity records.

As India’s digital economy expands, maintaining up-to-date Aadhaar credentials will be essential for seamless participation in financial systems, public schemes, and e-governance platforms. The extension until June 2026 is not just a procedural decision—it is an enabler of trust, inclusion, and empowerment in a digitally connected India.
