India Overtakes US as World’s Second-Largest Smartphone Market Supplier

By Maulik Majumdar , 31 July 2025

India has surpassed the United States to become the world’s second-largest supplier of smartphones, reflecting its growing stature in the global electronics manufacturing ecosystem. Bolstered by government initiatives, deepening supply chain networks, and robust investments by major players like Apple and Samsung, India’s share in global smartphone shipments rose to 20% in the second quarter of FY25. This milestone signals a significant pivot in the global supply chain, with India emerging as a key manufacturing hub as companies diversify away from China. The country is now poised to become a long-term strategic player in the electronics export landscape.

India’s Rise in Global Smartphone Supply Chain

India’s climb to the second spot in global smartphone shipments marks a major inflection point in the country's industrial narrative. For the quarter ending June 2025, India accounted for 20% of the world’s smartphone supplies—edging past the United States and trailing only China. This shift underscores the success of domestic manufacturing efforts and signals increasing global reliance on India as an electronics production base.

A combination of government policy support under schemes like Production Linked Incentives (PLI), competitive labor costs, and strategic shifts by global tech companies seeking alternatives to China have all contributed to this rapid expansion. The momentum also reflects India’s transformation from a consumption-driven market into a significant export-oriented manufacturing destination.

Apple and Samsung Lead India’s Export Surge

The surge in smartphone exports is largely driven by manufacturing heavyweights such as Apple and Samsung. Apple, in particular, has expanded its contract manufacturing in India through partners like Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron. iPhones made in India are now being shipped globally, especially to Europe and the Middle East.

Samsung, too, continues to scale up its Noida-based facility, one of its largest globally, contributing to export volumes. Combined, these firms are playing a pivotal role in placing India firmly on the global electronics supply map.

Policy Tailwinds and Infrastructure Push

India’s policy landscape has been critical in fostering this growth. The PLI scheme, launched in 2020, offered financial incentives to manufacturers achieving incremental output. This has not only attracted foreign capital but also encouraged domestic players to scale up. As a result, smartphone production in India has surged over the past three years, with export figures now accounting for over Rs. 90,000 crore annually.

Furthermore, improvements in logistics infrastructure, the rollout of industrial corridors, and streamlined customs processes have made it more feasible for companies to operate global supply chains out of India. Special economic zones (SEZs) and the availability of skilled labor at lower cost than competitors have also proven advantageous.

Implications for the Global Tech Ecosystem

India’s ascent is timely amid growing global efforts to de-risk supply chains that are overly reliant on China. Geopolitical tensions and pandemic-induced disruptions exposed the vulnerabilities in single-country dependencies, prompting multinational firms to adopt a “China plus one” strategy. In this scenario, India has emerged as the most viable alternative for electronics manufacturing due to its scale, talent, and policy alignment.

With companies increasingly routing their global exports through India, the country is expected to command an even larger share of global electronics production in the coming years.

Future Outlook: Can India Sustain the Momentum?

While India’s new position as the world’s second-largest smartphone supplier is a remarkable achievement, sustaining this growth will require continued policy support, deeper component-level manufacturing, and further investment in R&D capabilities. India still imports a significant portion of its semiconductor and display components, which exposes manufacturers to foreign dependency risks.

Addressing these gaps will be crucial in making India not just an assembly hub but a truly integrated manufacturing powerhouse. Nonetheless, with a young workforce, rising digital infrastructure, and strategic geopolitical relevance, India’s trajectory in the global smartphone supply chain appears firmly upward.

Conclusion

India’s leap ahead of the United States in smartphone exports represents more than just a trade milestone—it symbolizes a broader shift in the global manufacturing order. As the country continues to attract investment, build infrastructure, and execute reforms, it is poised to become a cornerstone of global electronics supply chains in the decade ahead.
