L&T Secures Rs. 1,000–2,500 Crore EPC Contracts for Rural Water Projects in Rajasthan

Larsen & Toubro (L&T), one of India’s largest engineering and construction conglomerates, has secured significant engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts from the Public Health Engineering Department of Rajasthan. The cumulative value of these contracts is estimated between Rs. 1,000 crore and Rs. 2,500 crore, falling under the company’s classification of “significant” orders. The scope of the awarded projects includes extensive infrastructure for rural water supply, fluorosis mitigation, and system rehabilitation across multiple districts. These developments align with Rajasthan’s long-term goals to improve public health through safe water access and sustainable infrastructure upgrades.

L&T Expands Water Infrastructure Footprint in Rajasthan

Larsen & Toubro, the USD 30-billion Indian multinational specializing in EPC services and advanced manufacturing, has deepened its engagement with Rajasthan’s infrastructure development through a series of new orders. These contracts were awarded to its Water and Effluent Treatment business vertical and are centered on addressing critical gaps in rural water supply and system reliability.

In a regulatory filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the company confirmed the order win, describing it as “significant,” a term it reserves for contracts valued between Rs. 1,000 crore and Rs. 2,500 crore. These projects, which span across Jhunjhunu and Ajmer districts, form a vital component of Rajasthan’s water supply enhancement strategy.

Scope of Work: A Closer Look at the Water Supply Projects

The flagship initiative within this package is the Rajasthan Rural Water Supply and Fluorosis Mitigation Project – Phase II, Package-1. This project is critical to delivering potable water to 285 villages, along with the urban centers of Surajgarh and Udaipurwati in Jhunjhunu district.

The scope of this EPC contract includes:

  • Installation of 5,251 kilometers of transmission and distribution pipelines
  • Construction of 38 ground-level reservoirs with a cumulative capacity of 40 million liters (ML)
  • Setup of 20 pump houses to facilitate water flow and pressure management
  • Erection of 132 overhead service reservoirs with a total capacity of 25 ML

The second major component involves the rehabilitation and strengthening of existing infrastructure in the Kekri-Sarwar sector of Ajmer district. This project entails the supply and installation of 43 kilometers of new transmission pipelines aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and reliability in water distribution systems.

A Strategic Boost to Public Health and Rural Development

These projects are more than just engineering accomplishments—they serve a crucial public health function. Rajasthan, like many parts of India, faces significant challenges related to water scarcity and groundwater contamination, particularly fluoride-induced health conditions in rural communities.

By focusing on fluorosis mitigation and comprehensive water access, the state government is taking a preventive healthcare approach, aligning infrastructure investment with human development outcomes. L&T’s involvement ensures the application of advanced engineering and project management practices, helping to deliver these vital services on time and within budget.

L&T’s Broader Commitment to Infrastructure and Nation-Building

As a diversified multinational, L&T has a strong track record in delivering critical infrastructure across sectors such as transportation, power, defense, and urban development. Its Water and Effluent Treatment business has been instrumental in executing large-scale, sustainable water infrastructure solutions across India and abroad.

The Rajasthan projects reaffirm L&T’s commitment to supporting national priorities under schemes like the Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to provide functional household tap connections in rural India. Moreover, these orders strengthen the company’s order book and reinforce its leadership position in the high-value EPC market.

Conclusion: Engineering Growth, Delivering Impact

L&T’s latest order wins in Rajasthan signify more than commercial success—they reflect the company's pivotal role in shaping India’s social infrastructure. Through these water supply and rehabilitation projects, L&T is not only creating economic value but also delivering a tangible public good by improving health outcomes and quality of life in underserved regions.

As infrastructure development increasingly intersects with environmental sustainability and public welfare, firms like L&T are poised to play a central role in India’s development narrative—where engineering excellence meets inclusive progress.
