Rs. 1,950 Crore City Gas Distribution Project Set to Transform Bankura and Purulia

A significant step toward energy infrastructure development has begun in West Bengal, where a Rs. 1,950 crore city gas distribution (CGD) project is being rolled out across the districts of Bankura and Purulia. Designed to expand access to cleaner and more affordable fuel, the initiative will establish a robust network for piped natural gas (PNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG), catering to both domestic and industrial consumers. With long-term implications for economic development, public health, and environmental sustainability, the project reflects India’s broader agenda of transitioning toward a gas-based economy.

Transforming Regional Energy Infrastructure

The city gas project in Bankura and Purulia is not just an infrastructure investment; it marks a fundamental shift in how energy is distributed and consumed in semi-urban and rural regions. At an estimated cost of Rs. 1,950 crore, the plan involves laying an extensive network of pipelines to deliver PNG to households, commercial establishments, and industries, along with setting up CNG stations to serve the transportation sector.

This marks a strategic extension of India’s natural gas grid into less urbanized areas, which have traditionally relied on more polluting and less efficient fuels like coal, firewood, or diesel. By bringing clean energy closer to the consumer, the project will help reduce carbon emissions while improving energy access in underserved zones.

Phased Rollout and Scope of Services

The implementation of the CGD network will be carried out in phases over the next few years. The first phase focuses on establishing the backbone infrastructure—pipeline networks, pressure regulating systems, and metering stations—followed by household and industrial connections.

Key features of the project include:

Piped Natural Gas for Households: Thousands of homes in both districts will gain access to a safe, reliable, and continuous supply of cooking gas, reducing dependence on traditional LPG cylinders.

CNG Stations for Transport: A chain of strategically located CNG outlets will be established along key transport routes, enabling cost-effective fueling for private vehicles, taxis, and public buses.

Support for Industrial Growth: With direct access to cleaner fuel, local industries—particularly those in manufacturing, textiles, and ceramics—will benefit from lower operational costs and improved energy efficiency.

Economic and Environmental Impact

This development has far-reaching implications beyond energy supply. The availability of CNG and PNG is expected to drive significant job creation, both during the construction phase and through ongoing operations and maintenance. Ancillary sectors such as logistics, engineering services, and manufacturing will also see a rise in demand.

On the environmental front, the project is expected to significantly cut down particulate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Replacing high-emission fuels with natural gas will also enhance air quality in Bankura and Purulia—districts that experience acute pollution during winter due to biomass burning.

Supporting India’s Gas-Based Economy Vision

This project is aligned with the central government’s ambitious target to raise the share of natural gas in India’s energy mix from the current ~6 percent to 15 percent by 2030. Expanding the CGD footprint to new geographies is central to achieving this vision, particularly as demand for cleaner fuel grows in the wake of heightened environmental awareness and global climate commitments.

The city gas rollout in Bankura and Purulia also reflects a strategic push toward energy equity—ensuring that smaller towns and districts are not left behind in the transition to cleaner, more efficient energy systems.

Conclusion

With a capital outlay of Rs. 1,950 crore and the potential to transform everyday life for thousands of people, the city gas distribution project in Bankura and Purulia stands as a model for decentralized energy development. It underscores a critical intersection of infrastructure, environment, and inclusive growth. As the project progresses, it is expected to deliver long-term economic and ecological dividends, while placing West Bengal firmly on the map of India’s clean energy transition.
