JSW Infrastructure Secures Rs 740-Crore Port Project to Boost Container Capacity in Eastern India

JSW Infrastructure has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority for a Rs 740-crore project at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Dock. The initiative involves reconstructing Berth 8 and mechanizing Berth 7 to enhance container handling capacity. Awarded on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) basis under a 30-year concession, this project reinforces JSW Infrastructure’s strategy to expand its terminal footprint under India’s ongoing port privatization program. With operations likely to commence during construction, the project is poised to strengthen the company’s container capabilities across India’s eastern and western coasts.

Strategic Expansion Through Eastern Gateway

JSW Infrastructure’s acquisition of the LoA marks a significant advancement in the company’s efforts to deepen its presence in the eastern maritime corridor. The project, located at the strategically critical Netaji Subhas Dock in Kolkata, is aimed at improving containerized cargo throughput at one of India’s oldest and busiest ports.

Awarded under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, the contract entails the redevelopment of Berth 8 and the mechanization of Berth 7—two major berths that play a pivotal role in cargo handling efficiency at the dock. The Rs 740-crore investment underscores the company’s confidence in long-term cargo volume growth, especially in eastern India, where maritime infrastructure is gaining renewed focus under India’s Sagarmala initiative.

Operational Timelines and Concession Framework

The project will be executed over a two-year construction window, but notably, JSW Infrastructure plans to begin operations during the development phase itself. This approach is designed to ensure minimal disruption to cargo movement and maximize early revenue generation by leveraging Kolkata's consistent trade volumes.

The 30-year concession granted under the DBFOT model provides JSW Infrastructure with both operational autonomy and strategic clarity. Such long-term frameworks are vital for capital-intensive infrastructure projects, enabling firms to amortize costs while optimizing operational efficiency over time.

Scaling Container Capacity Nationally

JSW Infrastructure has made deliberate strides in broadening its container portfolio, and this project serves as a cornerstone in that strategy. Once completed, the development will significantly bolster the company’s national container handling footprint, especially along India’s eastern seaboard.

The company’s growing container terminal portfolio also includes the New Mangalore Container Terminal on the western coast, currently undergoing an expansion from 0.2 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) to 0.35 million TEUs. With the addition of the Kolkata project, JSW Infrastructure is set to push its cumulative container handling capacity close to 1 million TEUs—a scale that places it among the more formidable private terminal operators in the country.

Aligning with India’s Port Modernization Vision

This strategic investment dovetails with the Government of India’s broader agenda to modernize maritime infrastructure through private sector participation. Under the Maritime India Vision 2030 and port privatization programs, projects like this are critical in upgrading operational efficiency, reducing logistics costs, and increasing global competitiveness.

JSW Infrastructure’s emphasis on modernization, mechanization, and multi-port integration reflects a forward-looking approach aligned with global best practices in port development and management. Furthermore, the company’s readiness to invest significantly under long-term concessions showcases private enterprise's increasing role in infrastructure-led growth.

Conclusion

By securing the Rs 740-crore container project at Netaji Subhas Dock, JSW Infrastructure has cemented its position as a key enabler in India’s maritime transformation. The project not only expands its capacity footprint but also reinforces its commitment to developing efficient, modern, and scalable infrastructure solutions. With growing cargo volumes, a supportive policy environment, and targeted capital deployment, JSW Infrastructure appears well-positioned to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India’s port ecosystem.
