Bondada Group Wins Rs. 400 MWh Battery Storage Project in Tamil Nadu to Bolster Renewable Energy Integration

Bondada Group, a prominent player in the construction and engineering sector, has secured a landmark project to develop a 400 megawatt hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) for Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL). The initiative will see large-scale, standalone BESS installations at Vellalaviduthi and Thennampatty, aiming to fortify grid stability, enhance renewable energy integration, and manage peak demand in the state. The project follows a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model and includes a 12-year purchase agreement with Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO).

Strategic Win in Clean Energy Infrastructure

In a significant boost to its clean energy credentials, Bondada Group announced on Monday that it has secured a high-impact battery energy storage system (BESS) project valued at 400 MWh from Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL). The contract is part of Tamil Nadu’s broader strategy to address energy intermittency from renewables and ensure a stable, round-the-clock electricity supply.

The project underscores the growing importance of grid-scale energy storage solutions in India's decarbonization journey. As renewable energy continues to expand its share in the country’s power mix, storage systems like these are critical for balancing load and ensuring reliability.

Dual-Site Grid-Scale BESS Implementation

The approved project involves setting up two standalone BESS facilities across Tamil Nadu. The selected sites—Vellalaviduthi and Thennampatty—will host infrastructure designed to cumulatively store and dispatch 400 MWh of energy. These systems will enable rapid grid responses to peak demand surges, support voltage regulation, and accommodate intermittent renewable generation, particularly from solar and wind sources.

By deploying BESS at the distribution level, Tamil Nadu aims to mitigate fluctuations in power availability, especially during evening hours when solar output tapers off but demand remains high.

Build-Own-Operate Model and 12-Year Agreement

Bondada Group will execute the project under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) framework, having emerged as the successful bidder through TNGECL’s competitive tendering process. Under this structure, the company retains operational ownership while selling energy storage services to the state utility.

TANGEDCO, the nodal agency overseeing power distribution in the state, will procure the battery services under a long-term energy storage purchase agreement lasting 12 years. The contract structure ensures a predictable revenue stream for Bondada while supporting the state’s renewable energy goals.

Enhancing Power Reliability and Renewable Integration

A notable feature of the system is its design for two full charge-discharge cycles per day. This operational flexibility allows the BESS units to absorb excess renewable energy during off-peak hours and release it when demand spikes, effectively flattening the supply curve and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel-based peaker plants.

This initiative marks a forward-looking step for Tamil Nadu, which has consistently led Indian states in renewable energy deployment. With the addition of large-scale battery storage, the state is reinforcing its commitment to a clean, stable, and resilient power grid.

Implications for India's Energy Transition

The successful awarding of this project to Bondada Group signals a broader shift in India’s energy infrastructure development—from merely generating clean energy to storing and managing it intelligently. As more states adopt similar storage-backed renewable strategies, energy independence and grid stability are poised to become key pillars of India’s transition to a sustainable power future.

Bondada Group’s latest win not only strengthens its standing in the clean-tech infrastructure domain but also sets a benchmark for future public-private partnerships in energy storage across India.
