VinFast Bolsters Thoothukudi EV Ambitions with Initial Cohort of 200 Hires

VinFast Auto India has onboarded its first 200 locally sourced employees for its upcoming electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. This move signals a significant step in the company’s phased strategy to build a workforce of approximately 3,500 over the next five years. The recruits have been enrolled in a rigorous training regime under the Naan Mudhalvan skilling initiative, facilitated through partnerships with institutions, government agencies, and technical mentors. As VinFast prepares to assemble its VF 6 and VF 7 EV models locally, this recruitment push reflects its commitment to embedding global manufacturing standards within the regional ecosystem  .

Local Talent Meets Global Expertise

In collaboration with the Tamil Nadu government’s Naan Mudhalvan programme and Guidance TN’s WorkLabs Cell, VinFast has structured a workforce model that combines 80 percent fresh local recruits with 20 percent experienced professionals. Candidates underwent selection from over 344 diploma students, followed by a dedicated two-month upskilling programme led by Vietnamese and Indian automotive experts. This hybrid model is designed to ensure that the plant upholds global manufacturing norms from day one  .

Capacity Ambitions and Economic Impact

VinFast’s Thoothukudi facility is earmarked for an initial capacity of 50,000 units per year, with a potential to scale up to 150,000 annually. This aligns with the plant’s strategic importance in VinFast’s Asia expansion strategy, positioning it to serve both domestic and international markets. The total investment in the project is approximately US $500 million (about Rs. 4,000 crore), spread over five years, and expected to support 3,000–3,500 jobs in total  .

Government and Community Collaboration

VinFast's effort has received substantial support from local authorities, including district collector K. Elambahavath and Tamil Nadu’s Industries Department. This public–private collaboration underlines a shared vision: fostering inclusive regional growth and upskilling rural youth through industry–academia interfaces. The success of this model could serve as a blueprint for future EV manufacturing projects across the country  .

Stepping Stone to National EV Mobility

This recruitment round is a critical precursor to the assembly of VinFast’s VF 6 and VF 7 electric SUVs, which debuted at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in New Delhi. The Thoothukudi plant is expected to support the ramp-up of EV infrastructure, including a dealership network and charging solutions, laying the groundwork for VinFast’s broader mobility strategy in India  .

Outlook and Strategic Significance

By inducting its first 200 employees, VinFast has demonstrated its execution capability and readiness to operationalize its Indian ambitions. As hiring continues in alignment with production phases, the initiative will not only create job opportunities but also foster skill development in emerging technologies. This foothold positions the company to make India a pivotal hub within its global EV manufacturing ecosystem.
